Thermal behaviour of kaolinitic raw materials from San José (Oruro, Bolivia)

Abstract Kaolin is widespread as a result of the alteration in San José Sn-Ag deposit located Oruro, Bolivia. This study presents chemical, mineralogical and thermal characterization kaolinitic deposit, which necessary to determine their optimal applications. Mineral phases these white silty materials were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) are quartz, kaolinite, K-feldspar, muscovite, illite minor halloysite, dickite, plagioclase, jarosite, rutile, alunite gypsum. The fraction < 63 µm contains 20–27 mass% kaolinite. Differential analysis (DTA) shows an endothermic peak at 520 °C associated with dehydroxylation kaolinite exothermic ~ 980 related crystallization mullite. TG curves show total mass loss up 1300 about 8 mass%. dilatometric shrinkage 890 produced collapse metakaolinite into spinel-like structure, another starts 1010 °C, beginning sintering, when phase transformed mullite amorphous SiO 2 . Lightness L* 80–92, but only mined have b* 4, suitable for paper filling
